Belong to Me

Marisa de los Santos reminds us that lying is never, ever a good thing. When a New York couple move to the suburbs near Philadelphia, (think Stepford Hell) they are greeted by judgment and dislike from the "queen bee" of the neighborhood. Cornelia is never dressed properly and gasp, has no children. so obviously she and her husband Teo are not a "real" family. Piper, the hostess with the most-ess, has issues, needless to say. She does have a sweeter gentler side, as she nurses her best friend through a battle with cancer, but I know her and did not like her very much. Deciding not to befriend Piper, Cornelia meets Lake, a waitress and all round good person with a genius son. Lake has secrets, and her son Dev wants to find out what the heck is going on, why they moved so suddenly, who his father is and where he lives. As Dev looks for answers, secrets come out that can destroy everyone. Living as I do, in Stepford, I can understand what Cornelia felt, being an outsider, and it made me think that maybe I should get out more. The suburban mentality runs wild in this book. Gossip, judgment, truth and lies, are the fuel that runs this train, and it is a good ride in the end, but I feel we cannot belong to anyone but ourselves.
