Drop City
Okay, okay! I was a little worried about T.C. Boyle when I didn't like The Tortilla Curtain, but I really liked Drop City. I think I related to the time, the early 70's, when I was, should I confess it, a hippie chick?! From a commune in California, with all the odd characters to a small Alaska town with even odder characters is quite the fun trip. When the commune is forced to move from sunny California to Alaska, fishes out of water is an understatement. The local folks don't know what to think of the long haired oddballs from the lower 48 and the hippies are so far out of their element, they don't seem to know what has hit them. How everyone adapts and can't adapt is such a good story, I whipped right through it. I will be looking for more Boyle and hope they are as entertaining as this one was.

I've never read any Boyle...I really don't understand this gap in my reading! So, should I start with Drop City? It sounds good.
ReplyDeleteAs a former hippie chick, now a grayhaired old woman, I'd say yes! It takes you back "to the day" if you know what I mean. It was fun to go back for a couple of days.
ReplyDeleteYou were a real hippie chick? Cool! I've only known one other true hippie who died her own wool and lived in a commune. It sounded so fun.
