Beware of Flying Packages!

Packages are flying back and forth as if suspended on invisible wires, Colorado to Louisiana, Florida and even just across town. I spend hours at the Fed Ex and UPS websites making sure all are received and signed for in time for the big day. Wine baskets, toys and videos, clothes, gift cards, it makes me dizzy just thinking about it. Worried the package for The Man will not get here from Canada in time, will The Boy get his Amazon order in time? I haven’t left the house except to go to the liquor store, and I am exhausted. I even cancelled Christmas dinner, opting instead for Christmas dessert and presents with my sister and her family. This house is forgoing the traditional turkey and all the trimmings for Chili Fritos with tons of cheese.

It makes me wonder what the heck is wrong with us? When is it enough? I keep getting that creepy feeling that I forgot someone major and have been checking and rechecking my lists to make sure no one is left out and I am keeping a few small gifts on hand in case someone unexpected comes a knocking or a wassailing or whatever the heck it is, so I don’t feel embarrassed. I am no Martha Stewart and wish I was. I have no tree yet and times a wasting. I did get the things that have arrived wrapped, and set under the ficus, just in case I don’t get the tree set up. I lost my cards and Jack the Dog needs allergy medicine! I think I need a nap! And I will keep ducking just in case a low flying package flies in the door.

  1. Martha Stewart would've quailed at me this year. Traditional Christmas dinner in a bar called Psycho. The walls are painted black. Two guys at the bar speaking Afrikaans. CanadaBoy's corgi wandering around while people threw him bits of turkey. A guy from Texas on the open mike singing Piano Man and playing the guitar. A Korean guy in his mid-20s begging for some kimchi to accompany the Christmas dinner. He finally scored some and ate happily -- chopsticks in his right hand and a turkey drumstick in his left. I'm ready for some chili Fritos, please. You don't know how ready...that makes me homesick in a way that Martha cannot.

  2. Well, all I can say is "Thank you for supporting my son." LOL He just got a job in the IT department at FedEx.

I know what you mean. I feel like I would be perfectly happy to decorate my house, donate in the names of my few family members and then just sit back and have fun together on the actual holiday. We didn't have much of a Christmas, this year and I was okay with that. I don't feel any great need to buy mounds of presents. Small is nice.

  3. Oh my! just the thought of chopsticks and turkey legs makes me laugh! Bookfool- I wish my family would stand for the donation idea, I have tried unsuccessfully in the past to get everyone to do it, but it's a no-go. At least this year I manages small, very thoughtful gifts, rather than just masses of stuff to add to all the stuff we already have! AND FED EX RULES !!!!
