The Heartbreaker

"The Heartbreaker" by Susan Howatch was just plain ICK. Maybe because it was part of trilogy, I should read the others, but this one turned me off. A mess of "leisure workers" (hookers), clergy, some murder mystery thrown in, and fund raising for an alternative medicine clinic, connected to the church, just pissed me off. It wasn't the sex part which was not that graphic, nor the murder part, which was not graphic either, I think it was the story being told from the two main characters, alternating between the fund raising beauty and the bisexual male hooker, who used his clients donations to get into her pants. The evil madame and her partner who runs an occult group, making porno films and snuff films, just add to the mess. Maybe I read this one too fast, but I couldn't get out of there fast enough.Life is too short to muck in the ICK.

  1. I so agree. I've found that if I must read something I think is getting on the icky side, I skim, these days. But, I'm also working on just setting things aside and saying, "This is not for me." Amazing how difficult that can be.
