Since I had not read ANY Harlequin books before, my best friend decided I need to expand my horizons and gave me 2. "Trust No One" by Barbara Phinney was an okay mystery, with a little romance thrown in. "Sheikh Surrender" by Jacqueline Diamond was a little more interesting, with more suspense. It just felt like cotton candy to me. Air and sugar without much substance. I'm not sure what I expected, but since so many women read them, I had to give it a try. I guess I wasn't really disappointed, but I doubt I will be filling my shelves with these. Only slightly better was "The Debutante Divorcee" by Plum Sykes.
I have to confess that when I was younger, my reading buddy and I loved to read what we called "Brand Name Books". You know the ones I mean, with Gucci, Pucci, and Louis V on every other page. I was poor and living vicariously, through the girls on the pages. I hope I have grown out of that. I did not feel anything for the characters, and (yawn) struggled to finish. Give me something to bite into and chew on.....I'm too old for cotton candy!

I have very little patience with romance, but there are some decent authors. Unfortunately, I think you have to read a lot of romance to find them. Jennifer Crusie is one (I'd classify her books "romantic comedy"). The Next line by Harlequin is one of the few in which I can tolerate most of the books. Unfortunately, I was just beginning to enjoy their Bombshell line and they eliminated it. Sucky.
