Spun Sugar Books

Since I had not read ANY Harlequin books before, my best friend decided I need to expand my horizons and gave me 2. "Trust No One" by Barbara Phinney was an okay mystery, with a little romance thrown in. "Sheikh Surrender" by Jacqueline Diamond was a little more interesting, with more suspense. It just felt like cotton candy to me. Air and sugar without much substance. I'm not sure what I expected, but since so many women read them, I had to give it a try. I guess I wasn't really disappointed, but I doubt I will be filling my shelves with these. Only slightly better was "The Debutante Divorcee" by Plum Sykes.

I have to confess that when I was younger, my reading buddy and I loved to read what we called "Brand Name Books". You know the ones I mean, with Gucci, Pucci, and Louis V on every other page. I was poor and living vicariously, through the girls on the pages. I hope I have grown out of that. I did not feel anything for the characters, and (yawn) struggled to finish. Give me something to bite into and chew on.....I'm too old for cotton candy!

  1. Wow, you're braver than I am, tackling Harlequin Romances. You're right about spun sugar.

I tagged you for an "Eight Random Things About Me" meme. If you'd like to participate, please visit my blog for more clarification.

  2. I have very little patience with romance, but there are some decent authors. Unfortunately, I think you have to read a lot of romance to find them. Jennifer Crusie is one (I'd classify her books "romantic comedy"). The Next line by Harlequin is one of the few in which I can tolerate most of the books. Unfortunately, I was just beginning to enjoy their Bombshell line and they eliminated it. Sucky.
