The Card: Collectors, Con Men, and the True Story of History's Most Desired Baseball Card

I am not a teenage boy, or a rich man, or a professional collector, but this book really fascinated me. Michael O"Keefe and Teri Thompson have written an amazing account about the Honus Wagner baseball card as well as the collectable industry. What started out as a sweet, all American hobby has turned into a really ugly business, with no conscience, no high ground and no accountability. The shady history of the most sought after card was as interesting as any novel, and the writing was excellent. Even if you are not a baseball fanatic, the history of cards and sellers, and the players who made them desirable, is compelling.

  1. As soon as I saw "Most Desired Baseball Card.." I knew what this book was about! Thanks for the heads-up...I didn't even know this book existed! Worried about telling my husband about it though...might start another round of mourning for his lost childhood baseball card collection.

  2. That sounds interesting. I would never have thought to even look at a book about collecting baseball cards if you hadn't reviewed it. I'm not surprised it's turned into an ugly business, though, as it seems like anything collectible is an avenue for greed, these days.
