Arcane Society Series

Since I am having trouble writing the review of Amsterdam, I moved on quickly to the beginning of the Arcane Society Series, by Jayne Ann Krentz. I had started in the middle , not realizing it was a series, but I liked it so much, I had to go to the beginning.

“Second Sight” is the first book in the series, and is listed under Amanda Quick, a pen name for Jayne Ann Krentz. It is part bodice ripper, part murder mystery, part paranormal, and all fun! Set in the late Victorian era, Venetia Milton is a photographer with secrets, trying to keep her family afloat, after a scoundrel steals all of her inheritance. Her aunt and brother are the only family she has and she struggles to make her way in a man’s world.

When she is contracted to take photos for the Arcane Society, a group of people who all have “psychical” powers, she is enthralled by Gabriel Jones, the person who is assigned to guide her and assist her with the photos. He has secrets as well. When they come together, the sparks fly!

After a narrow escape, from intruders, Venetia returns to her home, only to hear of the death of Gabriel Jones, and she takes his last name to establish herself, since a widow is always better than a spinster. Gabe returns from the “dead”, much to her shock, and together they discover an evil plot to steal the formula for greatly enhancing powers, within the Society.

This was such fun, and I am into the next book, “White Lies” which continues the story of the Arcane Society. Great summer reading!
