Widdershins-Charles de Lint

The Boy turned me on to Charles de Lint sometime back, and I fell in love!

If you have never read his books, urban fantasies, you are missing out on a wonderful experience. I thought I would not be into  the genre, but his writing just sweeps you away. His characters are so rich, and his subject matter is so interesting, I did not want it to end. I was reading slower and slower to drag out the ending of each of his books, to the point where the Man asked if I was having eye trouble.

“Widdershins” centers on the battle between Fairies and Cousins, mystical creatures that can change to animals and walk as people, based on their families,(crows, wolves, dogs). There are humans as well, Jilly Coppercorn, a painter who was crippled by a hit and run driver, Geordie Riddell, her best friend, the man she is drawn to, but neither will admit the attraction. The Crow Girls (my favorite characters) wild girls who can heal, and who can turn in to crows. They live in a huge tree with many other birds.

There are so many terrific characters, I just wanted to move to Newford, the setting of several of his books.

The intrigues and politics involved have been boiling under the surface for a long time, and when things come to a head, my feet started to sweat a sure fire way to know I am nervous and deeply  involved.

I highly recommend this book, for anyone who wants  to try something a little different. Who knows, your feet might sweat a little too.

I got this book from The Boy.

  1. I understand how you feel about Mr. de Lint's books, it's the same for me. I can't stop listening to The Mysteries of Grace
